The Colombian Exchange (Week 34)

Tuesday in class, you learned about the three major effects of the Colombian Exchange: disease, slavery and mercantilism. Of these three, which do you think was the most damaging to the people of the Americas? Be sure to back up your statement with explanation - your answer should be about a paragraph in length.

Out of the three major effects of the Colombian Exchange, I think that disease was the most damaging to the people of the Americas. Disease was brought from Europe, Africa and Asia, to North and South America. Since the native Americans did not have the immunity, they were killed by the thousands. A few major diseases were smallpox, measles, chicken pox, influenza, typhus and the whooping cough. Out of the three major effects of the Colombian Exchange, disease had the greatest effect because it killed native Americans by the thousands.

Of the three major effects of the Columbian Exchange, I think that disease was the most damaging. Originally during the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, there was just the black plague. By the time of the Exchange, it was uncommon, but it introduced many other diseases, including smallpox, chicken pox, measles, and many other deadly diseases.

Of the three effects on the Colombian Exchange, I feel that the disease damaged the Colombian Exchange. The diseases the Europeans brought were fatal towards the Native Americans because the were not immune. This even took out the people they were trading with and so forth.

Out of the three effects of the Colombian Exchange, I think that disease damaged the people of America the most. The Native Americans didn't develop any immunities against the diseases they faced. Because of this, hundreds to thousands of Native Americans were killed by disease. Some of the diseases commonly spread were measles, smallpox, chickenpox, and the whooping cough. These diseases spread quickly, resulting in a high death count.

I think that disease was most damaging to the people of the Americas. The Native Americans had never been exposed to the diseases that the explorers were bringing in, and the Native Americans ended up dying from diseases such as smallpox, typhus, influenza, and whooping cough by the thousands. These diseases killed off even whole villages sometimes. In fact, by 1555, almost all of the Native American population was gone due to this.

Although there were three main effects of the Colombian Exchange, desease was the defiantly the most damaging to people living in the Americas. Before this, there were only a few different diseases people knew of, like the Bubonic Plague. It was just a fact of life that if you got this desease, you would die. But once new deseases were introduced, people did not really know how to react! They were not immune to what the explorers were bringing, and it ended up killing a disturbingly large portion of the Native American population. Smallpox, chickenpox, whooping cough, and typhus are all just examples of the deadly deseases that were brought.

Out of the three main effects, I thought that disease was the most damaging to the Americas. The European traders and explorers brought many diseases, including smallpox, whooping cough, typhus, and chickenpox. These native americans didnt have any cures for the diseases, and the Europeans were mostly immune to it. The diseases devastated the Natives and their population decreased by a lot.

Out of the three major effects of the Columbian Exchange, disease was the most damaging to the people of the Americas. During those times there was not a lot of cures or advances in medicine to heal the diseases. Also the people in Africa, Asia and Europe were already immune to the disease. The Americas were not, and the diseases broke out all at once on them. The Americas were not immune to all of the disease. Not keeping good hygiene spread the diseases to many people killing thousands.

Of the three major effects of the Columbian exchange, I think that disease was the most damaging to the people in the Americas. I think this because people from Europe got use to all kinds of diseases overtime and became immune to most of them. However, the people in the Americas were never introduced to such things. This means that disease broke out on everyone native to America. This killed thousands and impacted the lives of many people.

I think that of the three major effects of the Columbian Exchange, disease was the most damaging and devastating to the Native Americans because they have only built up an immune to diseases that were in their hime land. They had no defense against the different diseases that the Europeans brought over to the Americas such as small pox, chicken pox, influenza and many more. It killed many Natives making it the most damaging effect of the Columbian Exchange.

Tiffani T. Blue Block said...

Out of the three major effects of the Columbian Exchange, I think the most damaging was disease. I think this because the diseases that were brought to the new world killed many of the local natives of america because they are not familiar with these illnesses and have not built up the same immunities that the british have, and so this had a greater effects on the natives than anyone else. diseases that affected them were smallpox, chicken pox, measles and many other illnesses that the native americans were not familiar with. disease is by far the most damaging effect because of the large quantity of native american indians that it killed.

The most harmful effect to the Colombian Exchange for Americans was disease. The Americans were not used to diseases from Europe such as small pox, and their bodies were not yet immune so their population was dying out. Almost everybody was sick with new diseases that they had no immunizations for either. Since so many people were sick from these diseases not as many people could work which caused just another big problem. This is why I think that disease was the main issue for Americans from the Colombian Exchange.

Out of the three effects of the Columbian Exchange I believe that disease was the most damaging. I believe this because Europe had many diseases, and brought them over. To add to it, all of the diseases struck at once, and the Native Americans had not developed the immune systems to fight off such a wave of disease, virtually wiping out almost all of their race.

Cathryn Seibel, Red Block said...

Out of the three effects of the Columbian Exchange I believe that disease made the most impact. Europe, Africa and Asia had become immune to the diseases over 1000 years and all of those diseases hit the Americas at once. This just about wiped out the Americas and only a few survived it. If one person were immune to one disease they were likely not immune to it all. This was the most vicious effects that they had no way to stop. Diseases had the most impact during the Columbian Exchange.

Jordan H. Blue Block said...

Out of the three major affects on the Americans, I think that disease was way more damaging. The Europeans brought over many disease such as small pox, chicken pox and measles. These diseases were fatal to the Native Americans because they hadn't see them before and their bodies weren't used to them. Also they didn't know how to treat the diseases one someone had them so it spread, wiping out almost all of their population.

Hari Iyer, blue block said...

of the three things brought in the Colombian Exchange, disease damaged the Americans the most. Before Europeans came, there was very little disease or sickness among the Native Americans. Those Native Americans were exposed to new diseases when the Europeans came, and the diseases exterminated the natives as if they were bugs. Slaves were also brought from Africa, so the Native Americans did not need to be part of the slave exchange.

Delaney T. Blue Block said...

Of the three effects brought in the Colombian Exchange, I believe diseases were the most damaging cause. The people in America weren't immune to the common sicknesses that riddled the east, killing many weaker or feeble citizens. Early medicines hadn't been created yet to heal the diseased people, wiping out a number of the population.

i believe that of the three effects that the Colombian Exchange slavery had the biggest impact on native americans because before they had always bin a free people until the explorers came making them weak and hungry that opened them to disease

Galen Deats, RED Block said...

Of the three damaging effects of the Colombian Exchange, I believe that disease was by far the most damaging. Not only were the diseases being carried over by the "discoverers" of America potentially deadly, it was worse; all those diseases struck at once. And what's more, the numbers show how devastating it was. 90% of Native Americans were wiped out by European diseases.

Kelsey D red block said...

Out of the three effects of the Colombian exchange I believe disease was the most damaging. The disease was carried over by explores of the Americas. Not only that, but all of the diseases struck at once. Which meant populations would drop a great deal. Ninety percent of Native Americans were dead due to multiple horrible diseases.

Out of the three major effects on the Columbian Exchange, I believe that disease was the most damaging. The native americans were not used to and immune to diseases like the people were from Europe. Smallpox, chicken pox, measles, and influenza were all examples of diseases the Europeans brought over. These diseases killed many native americans.

I think disease was the most damaging. The disease came from many places, and the native americans did not have the immunity. There were lots of diseases and it killed a lot of native americans.

Kyle B. Red Block said...

Disease, Because it killed off 90% of the native Americans.

Annaliese L. red block said...

Out of the three major effects of the Columbian Exchange, I think that disease effected the Americas the most. Disease effected the Americas the most because since the native americans weren't immune to any of the diseases that the explorers brought over it wiped out many people all across the Americas. This greatly devastated the Americas at this time.

Alex M. blue block said...

Out of the three major effects, disease caused the most damage to the people in the Americas. Travelers brought new diseases, that they were carriers of, to the Americas that the Native Americans had never seen before. These diseases were: measles, smallpox, chickenpox, and whooping cough. The Native Americans easily contracted the viruses and died very quickly.

Joshua Y. Blue Block said...

I think that disease had the most effect of the Colombian Exchange, because the natives weren't immune to those such foreign diseases. This basically wiped out about 60% of the natives that lived there. Also, since the natives didn't know they were carrying the disease, it spread more among people and more people died that way. And the diseases that were spread weren't an everyday disease. it was like chicken pox, whooping cough, and more! The natives never encountered these types of diseases, so they didn't have a cure, or an immunity, so they had to either hope that it goes away, or die hoping.

Winston Moore Red Block said...

Disease had the most effect on the Americas out of the three major effects of the columbian exchange. Disease plagued civilizations and stalled trading and exploration. The carriers of the disease were often immune because their bodies were used to it. To the natives, who were not immune, the diseases were very deadly

RYAN EARL.,RED BLOCK said...

Out of the three major effects disease was by far the most damaging to the people. Through the exchange many unknown diseases were brought over and because of this many people of the Americas died. Overtime more and more natives were killed because of the diseases and famine brought from the visitors. In the end over half the natives were killed.

Out of the three effects of the Columbian exchange, I beleive that Disease was the most affective to the people. I think this because there were many different diseases that were brought from all over the world that people didnt have the cure for because they have never been there which caused many deaths of the Americans. Some of these deadly diseases were smallpox, measels, chicken pox, whooping cough, ect. These diseases were very deadly and people were vonerable to them making them die much easier and faster which is why Disease had the biggest effect on the Colombian exchange.

Gareth Hart, RED block said...

I believe that disease was the most damaging to the americans. This is because all of the diseases that europe had ndured were sudenly thrust upon the natives. Also because the natives immune systems were not adabt to the diseases they were a lot more damaging to them.

Alyana J. Red Block said...

I think that disease was the most damaging to the American people out of all three major effects of the Columbian Exchange. The disease spread over five continents; Asia and Africa, Europe, and North and South America. The Native Americans did not have the immunity to fight against the disease, therefor they were killed by thousands. Smallpox, measles, influenza, typhus, whooping cough, and the chickenpox are a few examples of the major disease that had been brought across the continents. Over all, disease had the greatest effect because it killed large numbers of Native Americans out of the three major effects of the Columbian exchange.

Out of the three major effects of the Colombian Exchange, I think that the disease was the most damaging to the people of the America. The disease that Europeans travelers came with had no cure to them such as the Bubonic Plague. At the time, no one knew how to cure the disease nor did they know if they were sick. Where ever they went, they could get the deadly disease because they weren't immune to sickness. Without a cure to most diseases, they would lay in bed and do nothing by pray.

Marlea G, Blue Block said...

Out of the three major effects of the Colombian Exchange, I think that disease was the most damaging to the people of the Americas. All the diseases brought among them discombobulated them, and without the immunity they needed, thousands were killed off. Some of the diseases were smallpox, chickenpox, and whooping cough. These sicknesses took out entire villages of people, creating and extremely high death rate.

Kevin Miles, Blue Block said...

The disease was the most damaging out of the three major affects to the americas. Since the natives had not and did not need to develop the immunity to those dangerous and infectivity as those like the small pox and the measles and whooping cough, etc. 90% of the native american population was lost in those times.

Cal Lewis, Red Block said...

The most damaging effect of the three had to be disease, it killed off about 90% of the native population. Since the native's immune systems did not adapt to the diseases that the Europeans brought with them, the were very exposed and at risk. Another reason is that all of the European diseases happened at once, I couldn't imagine living in a town, then one day 50-90% of my village is gone due to sickness.

Lucy Stout (red block) said...

Out of the three major effects of the columbian exchange the disease was the most damaging. Diseases killed off majority of the natives, and because the natives had no immune system to fight it off they couldn't stop diseases. Diseases became unstoppable and therefor it is the most damaging effects of the columbian exchange.

Out of all three major effects of the Columbian Exchange I believe that disease had the biggest impression on the people of the Americas. I believe this because of how none of them were prepared for such diseases as smallpox, measles, typhus and more. The people of the Americas had never been introduced to these sicknesses so there immune systems didn't get the chance to learn how to overcome them. Soon many American people were getting very sick and getting other people sick since they did not know how well the diseases were spread. At this time the sicknesses that were new to the American people were fatal and many died. So, because of the amount of people dining from newly introduced sicknesses I think that diseases had the greater effect on the American people.

Parker Lum, red block said...

From the three effects of the columbian exchange i think disease affected people of the Americas. Because the people of the Americas did not have the built of immunity to diseases such as small pox or the bubonic plague those disease killed of 90 percent of the native american population. Another key factor was that diseases that the european, asian, and african gave to the native americans were introduced to the native americans almost instantly, unlike the Europeans who were introduced to those diseases over hundreds of years.

Griffin C. Blue Block said...

Of the three major effects of the Colombian exchange I think the most effective to the natives was disease. I think this because the natives were introduced to a brand new type of parasite that there body wasn't used to, and many of them died from this. The parasite that killed them was smallpox, influenza, and typhus. And to make things work Columbus cut of the hands of the natives if they were not obeying orders or didn't pay attention. Since Columbus thought of the natives as replaceable, and slaves, this type of mutilation of the natives happened a lot. From the combination from the deadly disease, such as smallpox, and influenza, plus the open woundes that were not healed, this cooked up to become a horrific bloodshed of natives.

Ariana W said...

Out of the three things that effected the natives the most, I say disease was the most powerful because although the natives had knowledge about disease, they only had knowledge about diseases that plagued their lands for hundreds of years. When explorers came from Europe, they brought along with them new diseases. The natives did not have any knowledge on how to cure these diseases, nor did they have any immunity to it. Because of that, the death toll of the new diseases was the equivalent to a smaller scale version of The Bubonic Plague.

Kalanie T. Red block said...

I figure that out of the three things that most effected the natives was disease. It spread very quickly and all over. it transfered from many places and overtook many. Lots of the population lessened because of the deadly diseases. it was very effective and caused many problems. Especially because you couldnt tell that you had it until you were veery sick.

Zaira T. Red Block said...

Out of the three from the Colombian Exchange it would have to be disease that was most damaging. It had many diseases from whooping cough to smallpox. It might sound small but it left a lot of damage wiping out thousands of Europeans.
