ROT Themes (Week 32)

This year, we've examined multiple themes through literature. In Roll of Thunder, there were many different themes presented. Please choose one of the theme statements below (or write your own based on ROT) and explain how it applies to your life in a paragraph:
  • Challenges are tough or easy. It's how you deal with them that gives them their complexity.
  • Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty.
  • It takes nothing to start a fight. It takes skill to stop one.
  • Handling difficulties as a child is not easy. Sometimes handling them at all makes you an adult.
  • Give other people chances, not just one chance.

I think that it takes skill to stop a fight applies to my life because since I have a very neutral opinion about most things, I tend to listen to both sides of an argument instead of just saying why I am right and the other person is wrong because I know of both sides and can stop a fight more easily because of it.

"Give other people chances, not just one chance." This applies to my life a lot, I am a very trusting and forgiving person. Sometimes people mess up, and I do to. So I definitely believe in giving people chances and the right to explain themselves. People may not give the best first impression, so letting people start over is a valuable skill.

I think that the theme "Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty" is the best way to describe my life. A lot of the time I just want to lie around and take the easy way out and not put a whole lot of effort into stuff. Though I realized that it's better to spend more time on something than doing a bad job and not caring. I learned it's better just to be proud in your work and have something I'm proud about. I think that the quote means that sometimes you have to swallow your pride and do the harder thing.

"Handling difficulties as a child is not easy. Sometimes handling them at all makes you an adult." This applies to my life because when I was little there were a lot of problems I experienced, and most of them I worked out. From then on, I've been a good problem-solver.

"Challenges are tough or easy. It's how you deal with them that gives them their complexity." This applies to my life a lot because I'm good at dealing with problems or challenges that I have to face. They can vary from learning how to paint this better or draw that better to having a slight problem with math homework. If I try to learn how to draw something without practicing, then that's a very hard thing to do. If I try to always take shortcuts in math without knowing how to do it without those shortcuts, I'm making it harder on myself to understand the concept. If I'm faced with any challenge, I usually try to take the easiest way to solve it.

"Challenges are tough or easy. It's how you deal with them that gives them their complexity." I always make challenges in my life, whether it is doing homework or cleaning my room. Though they are very easy challenges, I have a tendency to not deal with them correctly and making my life harder. I always act like I know exactly how I want to do things, I just have trouble doing them that way. I need to start thinking if I can actually do the things I plan on doing, and if I can't, I need to find a way to do them.

The theme statement of, "Give other people chances, not just one chance," relates the most to my life because I have to give people many chances but I am often too stubborn to do so. For example I am often frustrated greatly by my friends, and though I know that I must give them more chances I just feel like I have already given them too many chances. Also I feel tired of giving them all these chances if they are going to just turn around and make me feel awful. So that is why this theme statement is the most relatable to my life at the current point and time.

I think that "sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty" is the best theme statement to describe my life because I'm not someone who just sits around and waits for change to happen. I am a person that is willing to do whatever it is I need to protect something I care about, or to fight for somethingI believe in. I am a person who takes things a little more personally when somebody, or something, challenges me. Part of the reason I am the "get your hands dirty type of guy is because I have always been pretty short, but those bigger (Brandon) than me try to take me on (Brandon) and I have had to learn how to fight back for my self.

The theme that best suits me is, "Challenges are tough or easy. It's how you deal with them that gives them their complexity." For example there is a big project. I could either choose to break it up into blocks, or finish it the night before the project is due. I like to plan out my work before starting. This way, I can make my life easier.

I think that "sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty" applies to me the most. I am the type of person who will tackle a problem as soon as it comes up. I don't need anyone else to t=do the work that I should do myself. Although I may not be big or strong enough, I will get the energy I need to finish the job, and I will always finish it well.

I think giving other people chances, not just one chance is something important to remember. For you don't know if someone is trying to change, or better themselves. You also don't know if what they did was off their own will or if they didn't have a choice. To add onto this, I also have considered this something important to use in real life, and helps for you to make, and forgive friends.

"It takes nothing to start a fight, it takes skill to stop a fight". I think this applies to me because I sometimes get into fights or disagreements with my friends but i always try to understand their sides and settle the argument.

"Challenges are tough or easy. It's how you deal with them that gives them their complexity." This applies to my life because I try to challenge myself in many ways if its at school or at dance or anywhere. If you act like you can never overcome the challenge then that challenge will be difficult to achieve, but if you try your hardest and have a good attitude about it it will be easy. I always try to have a good attitude when challenges come into my life. I`m not saying that all challenges are easy, but if with the wrong attitude you will just make it harder on yourself and others.

Lucy Stout (red block) said...

"Give other people chances not just one" to me this means exactly what it says. Sometimes when you give a person one chance to accomplish a specific thing they could mess it up. If you give them more then one chance it gives them more chances to perfect it. This can relate to many people because even at school like with a test for instance, if you do not get a good grade at first you may get a chance to redo it. This will always give you a chance to make what ever you do better.

"Challenges are tough or easy. It's how you deal with them that gives them their complexity." This applies to my life because each day I face easy and tough challenges. How I deal with each challenge gives the challenge its complexity. Usually the easy challenges in my life I don't think much about, but I go back and think on them and see that they were a much tougher challenge. My challenges vary from school, to dance, and to friends. If I give the time to think on each of my challenges I realize how complex they each are. I then decide where to go from there, and I usually make the right decisions.

"Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty". I think that this applies to my life the best, because when I really want something, I have to work for it, because i know that it won't come easy. I've learned throughout life that you can't always take the easy way out, and you have to put effort into the things you want to achieve. It's better to produce a good piece of work than to not do it just because you don't want to, because in the end, no one will be happy, so it's better to do something you can be proud of.

Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty. That applies to me, because I have never wanted to be around anything insect, or insect-like. Whenever I see them, I always have someone else do it for me, or I finally do it, because I am pressured. even if you are a king, or even a god, sometimes it takes you and only you get rid of whatever is in your way.

"Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty", this applies to me in many ways. One reason being that I play softball, and if you're not getting your clothes dirty you're not doing something right! Also, a lot of the time when it comes to
school work sometimes you might want to cheat or copy off your friends work. But you might not realize that it is much easier to do the work yourself. This quote tells me sometimes it is easier to take the harder route then take the easy one.

"It takes nothing to start a fight. It takes skill to stop one."

This quote applies to me in several ways. It would indeed take absolutely nothing for me to punch a person I disliked in the face so hard that I was arrested for battery. However, it takes a great force of will to prevent me from smacking a person whom has done me wrong, even more so if we are actively fighting and need to halt under some circumstances (i.e. approaching teacher or other adult).

"anyone can start a fight, but it takes skill to stop it". this is true in many ways. like many wars it took a day or maybe a week to start, but it took years to end. this applies in life in many ways like you can get into a fight with someone else but you need to be clever to end it. like with papa setting his field on fire to stop the hanging.

"Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty"
This theme applies to my life because I believe that sometimes you have to be tough and do some things the hard way, but in the end it is all worth it. I believe in this theme because I think that you have to work for the things you got instead of getting things handed to you. This is a very important lesson for many people to learn.

"Give other people chances, not just one chance." I chose this one cause I forgive people a lot and give them a chance to change. I usually give people chances because I can believe they can be nicer and treat me better, but if they don 't change, then i just leave them alone.

"Sometimes you have to get your close dirty" This applies to my life because sometimes i do something i regret and i need to make up for it. You can always do the easy thing and say nothing and do nothing, but you should always do the right thing, and make whatever you did right by "Getting your close dirty".

"Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty" this applies to my life because sometimes I make a mistake and later I have to make up for it. Sometimes to do something good you have to do something bad, but because it becomes something good the means are justifiable in the end. To do certain good things
In life "you have to get your clothes dirty."

Give other people chances, not just one chance applies to my life because that is exactly what my dad does NOT do; and I wish he did. More chances = more trust and everyone needs to trust each other or else nobody can work together without trust.

"Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty" applies to me because most of the time i want to find the easiest fastest way possible in everything i do but i learned when i rush the quality of work is terrible. So i take my time and give one hundred percent at everything.

I think that the theme "Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty" applies directly to me because most the time you want to be Mr. Nice Guy but like we all know things don't always happen like you would expect so sometimes you have to deal with stuff the hard way and get your clothes dirty.

"Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty," applies to my life in a number of ways. For example, my hobbies include sports that sometimes cause me to get cold and muddy while I'm out in a field. What matters is that you play your hardest during the game and to not be a bystander. Another example includes the way you have to be honest sometimes in your life even if it is going against a crowd.

I think that handling a difficulty as a child is not easy, and that sometimes handling them at all makes you an adult. I believe this because sometimes you have to make decisions you don't want to whether it means sacrificing something or doing something you don't want to either way it takes pure bravery.

"Being brave doesn't mean not being afraid to go somewhere, it means going anyway. "

"Sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty." This theme applies to my life a lot, and probably anyone else's too. In a perfect world, everyone could sit back and relax while everything plays out nicely. But in reality, you have to really work for what you want, and to get anywhere in life, take a stand for what you believe in.

"It takes nothing to start a fight. It takes skill to stop on". This applies to my life almost everyday. This is so because everyday, I find myself in a fight with my sister over the simplest things such as who wears who's clothes. The fight could go on for a while, but eventually, we come to an agreement. Also, lately, i've been finding myself in the middle of huge fights between my friends. We all get fired up over little things but we find it so hard to stop.

"Give other people chances, not just one chance". I feel as though this theme applies to my life greatly. Quite a lot, I tend to say "it's okay" to people when they do wrong and let them slip their way out of trouble. This often gets me in a bundle where it's hard for me to say "no". Another way this applies to my life is because a certain person tends to look at my friends, whom they don't know at all, and call them ugly names. I have given her many chances and my forgiveness, but I'm giving up. She needs to give those people (again, who she doesn't know) more than just one chance. Because who knows; they could become your best friend.

"Sometimes you have to get your cloths dirty" THis applys to my life because it means that although somethimes you feel lazy, if you really want to do something, you need to fight to do it. Also, this quote applys to my life because usually having fun means getting your cloths dirty like when i play sports. I would rather "get my clths dirty" and have fun than not have any fun but still have clean cloths.

I like to "Give other people chances, mot just on chance." I do not like to get angry and am usually a mellow person. I believe that I shouldn't judge anyone or anything when you see them; but you don't know how they act. And sometimes people need to have a few tries to make the right diction. That's why I tell people what they did wrong and steer them in the right direction.

The one theme that most relates to me is "sometimes you have to get your clothes dirt. I chose this theme because sometimes I want to keep my clothes clean, not push myself and be lazy, but I know I have to work hard. My definition of "getting my clothes dirty" is doing something that is outside my comfort zone or doing a task that I wouldn't normally do.

Owen C. Red Block said...

"sometimes you have to get your clothes dirty." I think this describes my life the best because I always like to take the easy way out. Getting your clothes dirty means that you are willing to make sacrifices to do whats right. Sometimes, instead of keeping quiet or not doing something, I should act and sacrifice.

I personally think that you should give people more than one chance because we all make mistakes. That phrase is used often. However, it is very true. sometimes you have to try and understand things from another persons point of view.

I think that sometimes you must get you clothes dirty. It might be to save someone and you can always wash them. It probably doesn't even look bad. It might be to get revenge on a person who is mean like the kids to the bus.

The theme that applys to my life most would be probably be "It takes nothing to start a fight. It takes skill to stop one". This theme applys to my life in the way of friendship fights. It is very easy to start a friendship fight, but yes, it does take some skill to stop one. For me it seems like I am a lot of the time being the resolver and help stop the fight. And my friends are the people who start the fights, yet I must admit I have been in there spot in the situation too. So, because of how I help resolve fights (skillfully) this theme statement apples to my life.

Handling difficulties as a child is not easy. Sometimes handling them at all makes you an adult. This applies to my life almost every time there is a problem. When I was little and I had a problem I tried to see if I could fix it myself, if not I would go ask for help. I still do to this day. This is why most adults trust me. When I look at my four year old nephew I see that he struggles with problems, if he has a problem he will try to fix it but when he can't, he just hides it or gets rid of it. Eventually we find out and he gets in trouble.
