Cassie vs. Lillian Jean (Week 30)

We learn a lot about both Cassie and Lillian Jean in Ch. 8. Pick one of the girls and write one thing you learned about her. Your response should be a paragraph in length.

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I learned how naive she is. She is so confused and bewildered at what happened. It shows she is naive because she truly thinks only the way she has been taught and not for herself. Further, she truly believes that Cassie was her friend, not just fooling her.

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I've learned that Lillian Jean isn't very smart. She should've known that she was being mean to Cassie in the first place, and wasn't smart to know that she would get beat up very soon. She also should've known to not fall for Cassie's trap.

I've learned that Cassie is helpful when Cassie helps around the house and does chores. She knows that her parents are going through a hard time with Mama loosing her job, and wants to be helpful. She also is determined to keep the land because she wants to show the white people that black people can have their own land too. It is especially hard because the Wallace's are trying to prevent them from shopping in Vicksburg. Everyday, she does chores along with Stacey, Christopher John, and Little Man, such as cooking, cleaning, feeding, milking, picking cotton, and more.

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I learned that Cassie is a very independent person. Cassie thought of up of a plan to seek revenge on Lillian Jean and pursued the plan by herself. Cassie's plan would only work if she was independent and secretive. She didn't get anyone else's help and Cassie executed her plan by herself showing that she is independent.

Cassie is a very manipulative girl. She will stop at nothing to get what she thinks she deserves! I learned this through her actions during Chapter 8. She pretended to be a "friend" to Lillian Jean, only to learn her secrets and to later use them against her! Cassie is shows to be a sneaky girl, creating a master plan to get what she wants without Lillian Jean suspecting a thing.

After the fight I think that Lillian jean is not smart. She was totally manipulated by Cassie. She didn't get a little suspisios at all. Most people would get even a little suspisios plus she led her into a alleyway without any problem.

In chapter eight I learned that Cassie is sneaky. Cassie regains Lillian Jean`s trust, and the entire time Cassie was plotting against her. I did not know this before because Cassie seemed pretty straightforward and direct in other chapters. I was interested to find out that Cassie sometimes does not always speak her mind right away, but waits for the right moment to "attack". Chapter 8 proves that Cassie is a sneaky character because she does not immediately beat Lillian Jean up. This chapter revealed more character traits about Cassie that I was interested to find.

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean I learn that Cassie is very organized. She had premeditated her attack on the miss. She had found a trail learned her secrets.

Lillian is a really ignorant person. Lillian Jean live's in a 'perfect world'. She thinks everything should go her way and that she can trust everybody. She's ignorant to think that Cassie was giving her a present in the forest. She thought Cassie was a nice girl, even after she got beat up she was confused, thinking Cassie was a 'nice girl'. I believe that Lillian Jean isn't a very nice or considerate person.

Annaliese L. red block said...

I learned that Lillian Jean is actually kind of stupid. It really says something about her personality because it is quite hard to believe that someone would even trust their enemy with all their deepest darkest secrets. Lillian Jean is also kind of gullible, to say the least, she let Cassie take her down into the gullies knowing that she should probably not trust her.

Jack S. Red Block said...

I learned that Lillian Jean is the average white girl back in the 30's. She is racist and expects nothing good coming from black children (except using the to carry books). She takes advantage of those who aren't as fortunate and expects the to do as she is told no matter what. Lillian Jean comes form a wealthy family who has no respect towards other races except her little brother Jeremy. When cassie attacks her she is in shock and awe because she has disobeyed her command. Lillian Jean is cruel to others that she thinks aren't worthy as a person.

Owen C. Red Block said...

When Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I learned that Lillian Jean is not very smart. Also, Lillian Jean expects everything to go her way, and trusts everybody, even Cassie. Lillian Jean despises blacks except for letting them carry her books. Lillian Jean is not very bright because she should have been suspicious when Cassie suddenly befriended her. She told Cassie her innermost secrets and completely trusted a black kid to keep the secrets. When Cassie led her to the forest she wasn't wary at all, just curious and delighted. Even when Cassie started fighting her, she was confused. Lillian Jean got beat up and was very shocked. She expected Cassie to obey her every command. I think that Lillian Jean is pretty stupid.

Hari Iyer, blue block said...

I think that Lillian Jean is just too trusting. She trusted Cassie over a few small words and the title "Miz". Cassie gained her trust and all of her innermost secrets too easily. Also, she is a white, and Lillian Jean would normally think of herself above Cassie, as Cassie is black.

BEN SUHLER RED BLOCK said...

i learned that lillian jean simms is a realy bad person on the out side but once cassy befriender her she found out that lillian jean sims can be a nice friend and is a person who would trust her close friends and cassey.

Laura J., blue block said...

Cassie can be a deceiving person. She had a whole plan to trick Lillian Jean and beat her up. Throughout the book, many see Cassie as a girl who is tired of the whites treating the black like they're worse. Because of Lillian Jean treating her as lower than her, Cassie decides to get back at Cassie. She pretended to be nice to 'Miz' Lillian Jean, carried her books, and listened to Lillian Jean talk about her life.

Galen Deats, Red Block said...

In chapter 8 of RoT, I learned that Cassie is vengeful. She tricked Lillian Jean into being her friend and then fought with her until she apologized for what she and her father did at Strawberry. Cassie also made sure Lillian couldn't tell anyone by learning personal gossip about Lillian Jean that she would tell everyone if she told.

Gareth Hart, RED block said...

I learned that cassie was really smart. Not just did she find a way of geting revenge on lillean jean but also did it in a way that ment that she wasn't punished. I also found out that cassie is tough because she was able to beat up lillean jean, who was 3 years older than her.

isaac W. blue block said...

After Lillian Jean gets beat up by Cassie i learned Cassie is ver smart. She thought of an idea to manipulate Lillian into believing Cassie was a really good friend and that she was trust worthy. So when she told Cassie all her secrets Cassie would have something to black mail her with. She also came up with the idea herself.

Mason M Blue Block said...

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I learned that Cassie is now starting to think about her actions BEFORE she does them instead of after. I figured this out when Cassie thought of the whole plan to befriend Lillian Jean and pretend to be her friend so she can get what she wants in the end. Instead of just beating up Lillian Jean without thinking about it, Cassie actually thought about the consequences and made a way for them to go away, in this case by threating to tell Lillian Jean's secrets to everyone. Also, Cassie thought about what Lillian Jean's parents would do if they found cuts and bruises on Lillians face, so Cassie only hit her in places besides the face. This proves that Cassie is starting to think about what she does before she does them.

Cassie as nice as she is did the "right thing" in Lillian Jeans eyes and helped her out with her books on the way to school. But one day Cassie snapped, and I thoroughly believe that this was her intention all along. She beat her up. I learned that Cassie, as everyone does has a dark side. A violent side, and I did not except this from her but I think that she left a massive impression on LIllian Jean and I don't think Lillian Jean will be messing with her anytime soon as Cassie, a 9 year old girl beat the pulp out of LIllian Jean, a 13 year old girl.

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I have learned that Lillian isn't that smart, or respective at all. She only cares about herself, and occasionally her family. She is too fed up, of the fact that she is white, and the Logans are black. She is also very not so bright at all, because she let her guard down, to somebody who is younger and a different race than her's in her timeline. She is just too stupid to let her guard down, and give away all of her secrets to whoever hshe has been mean to. This is like the saying: revenge is a dish best served cold. Some people, like Cassie, will not care what they have to do to get revenge. Even if that means being nice to the person they are planning to be mean to.

Kyle B. Red Block said...

I learned that Lillian Jean is a huge snob and is really mean to Cassie. Lillian Jean is a HUGE believer in the fact that whites are better than blacks. In doing so she is being really mean to Cassie.

In the book Roll of Thunder hear my Cry, when Cassie beats up Lillian Jean i learned right then and there that Cassie is very powerful and deceiving. When she was executing her plan I knew that she was going to pull a potato out of her pocket and do something unexpected. Although Lillian Jean was unexpected of Cassies plan, she did everything that Cassie expected.

RYAN EARL.,RED BLOCK said...

I learned that Cassie is a revenge seeker and that if you hurt her, she'll get back at you in some way r form. This also showed how even though Cassie knows she shouldn't harm Lillian Jean, she just doesn't care and all she could possibly care about in the world, is revenge. I thought the way Cassie blackmailed Lillian Jean was smart, but stupid because Lillian Jean could easily get out of the blackmail.

Isaiah Updegraff, Red block said...

I learned that Cassie was really sensitive to some things but she doesn't mind doing what she wants/needs to do. Cassie is smart because she thinks about what shes going to do before she does it but sometimes it is not the best choice.

Sarah D. Blue Block said...

I learned that Lillian Jean is integrous. I learned this because when Cassie was apologizing to Lillian Jean,Lillian Jean really believed that if Cassie stayed in her "place" God would be forgive her. This shows that she really believes what she has been taught. It also shows in this place in the chapter that Lillian Jean is very sweet, yet she is being a jerk without even knowing it.

Delaney T. Blue Block said...

So far in this novel, I have learned that Lillian Jean is gullible. She willingly follows Cassie into the forest, comepletely forgetting about their fight a short while ago. It seemed to have passed over her that Cassie was young, naive, and revengeful. After Cassie offered her friendship, Lillian Jean accepts without hesitation. Most people would have assumed that a girl like Cassie wouldn't change overnight.

Alice P. Blue Block said...

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I learned that Cassie is manipulative and deceiving. For a while, Cassie gained Lillian Jean's trust by acting as her "personal slave" and listening to her. After gaining her trust, Cassie uses her new found knowledge about Lillian Jean and uses it against her. I also learned that she is manipulative when she threatens, or blackmails, Lillian Jean saying that if she told anyone about their wrestling match, she would tell every single secret that she told her to everyone she sees.

Jordan H. Blue Block said...

After Cassie beat up Lillian Jean, I learned that Lillian Jean wasn't very smart. She wasn't smart enough to realize that she was being mean to Cassie. She thought that she was just being normal. She also wasn't very smart to realize that Cassie wasn't truly being nice to her but she was just tricking Lillian into telling Cassie her secrets.

After Cassie beat up Lillian Jean I relized that Cassie was very confident. It is a big deal for her to stand up the a white girl, and this is defiepnetly breaking social Norms. But this took a while. Lillian was beating mea to Cassie for long enough I think Cassie just got to a point she couldn't stand it and this is why she did the act. But I think it was a very brave thing for Cassie to do and it definetly taught her a lesion, so Cassie is confident.

After Cassie best up Lillian Jean, I came to realize that thought she was a young girl, Cassie could be quite clever and deceiving. She was able to befriend Lillian Jean, going against the social norm. Cassie even carried Lillian Jean's books to gain more trust. It seemed to work, because after a while of their "friendship", Lillian Jean told Cassie her inermost secrets. Then, Cassie wrestled Lillian Jean to the ground and beat her up, threatening to tell all her secrets if she spoke a word. This was a bold move considering how dangerous it was for Cassie, a black girl, to wrestle down a white.

I learned that Lillian Jean is very oblivious, she trusted Cassie for some weird reason and had bad stuff happen to her for it. Lillian obviously didn't understand that Cassie could use her secrets against her. I'm not sticking up for Lillian, but she dug herself a hole and now has to lie in it.

Tiffani T. Blue Block said...

After Cassie beat up Lilian Jean I learned that Cassie is reckless. She had no clue whether or not Lilian Jean would have been able to overpower her! Lilian Jean could have very well flipped things around and beat up Cassie instead! Cassie didn't think things through all the way and she just happened to come out lucky. Unlike some people in this world, she was dumb and didn't get punished for doing so. In the real world when someone doesn't think things through then something bad tends to happen to them. Take a relationship that wasn't thought through for example. Its just dumb to do and then in the end your heart gets broken. So I learned that Cassie is dumb and reckless.

Maya W. Red Block said...

I learned that cassie can be devious and wants people to know their place.

Marlea G, Blue Block said...

After all that Cassie did to Lillian Jean, I learned how brave and smart she is. It took a lot of bravery to trick Lillian Jean because if she got caught, the consequences would be horrifying. So, she used her cleverness to think up a way to teach Lillian Jean a lesson and not get in trouble for it. In order to do this, Cassie blackmailed Lillian Jean not to tell anyone about their little fight. Although clever to use her knowledge to Cassie's advantage, blackmailing a white girl could have brought upon even more severe consequences. So, from this I learned that Cassie must be smart and brave, or she wouldn't have been able to do these things.

Kelsey Deos red said...

After Cassie and Lillian Jean acted towards each other I learned a lot about Cassie. She will stand up for what she believes in, no matter what the consequence. This shows that she is very brave. Cassie is also very clever, she blak
mailed Lillian Jean. A weak little white girl, she is weak yet has much power over Cassie.

Alex M. blue block said...

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I learned that Cassie is very strategic. She planned out the whole thing by geting close to her by being nice and carrying her books. While she is beating her up, Cassie stays away from Lillian's face to make sure no one can see what she did to her.

Kiki L. said...

After Lillian Jean and Cassie's fight, I learned that Cassie is a very manipulative girl. At first, Cassie acts very "respectful" towards Lillian Jean to gain her trust. Soon Lillian Jean thought of Cassie as a friend, and poured her secrets to Cassie. Knowing these secrets, Cassie uses them against Lillian Jean, and would spread the secrets if LillianJean told her parents that Cassie beat her up. Cassie is very smart allowing Lillian Jean to be her friend, and then using it against her.

Parker Lum, red block said...

What i have learned in chapter 8 was that Cassie seeks revenge no matter what happens. In town, Cassie gets publicly humiliated by Lillian-Jean, Mr. Sims and even her own grandmother, for getting in Lillian-Jeans way on the side walk. After that encounter Cassie thought up a plan for revenge, and for the next month she acts like LJ's slave. Then Cassie takes revenge, she beats up LJ when she least expects it. Based on what happened we can assume that Cassie planned a very elaborate plan to get revenge.

Winston Moore, Red Block said...

After Cassie beats up Lillian Jean, I learned that Cassie is a very self respected person. Cassie wanted to seek revenge on Lillian Jean and did all by herself. Cassie's plan would only work if she was alone. She didn't get anyone else's help and Cassie executed her plan by herself showing that she is independent.

Jackson F. Red block said...

In the recent chapters I learned a lot about Cassie. I think that she took her father's words the wrong way. Her actions showed that she is a clever but naive child. She did not receive the satisfaction that she thought she would and that is because there was none to be had. I sincerely hope that she learned a lesson about revenge, it gets you no where.

Ryan C. Blue Block said...

I learned how manipulative Cassie can be after she plays Lillian Jean like a game of chess. I think that she is also very smart for a girl her age. I also learned that she is definitely a fighter and that she is a strong one at that. I found that she wont give up even when things are looking bad because in many of the situations things were not going in her favor but she didn't back down.

Kalanie T. Red Block said...

I learned that Lillian Jean does not hate all black people. Even though it was a plan for revenge, lillian Jean was nice to cassie in return and truted cassie with her secrets.

Ariana w. Red block said...

I learned that Cassie is a very stubborn person and will not simply give up when the world pushes her down. Cassie could have backed down and done nothing. But instead, she fought back with all her might against both Lillian Jean and the world that created the social norm itself.

Zaira T. Red Block said...

After what Cassie did to Lillian Jean, I learned that Cassie doesn't know about what white people think about black people. Cassie treated Lillian by something known as Respect Those Who Respect You; Cassie hasn't really opened her eyes and realized what is going on around her. She doesn't know until Ma tells her. Cassie is young but now she understands that she has to respect Lillian because Lillian is white. Even though Cassie doesn't like how Lillian is.
