I think the Byzantines were still able to exist because they did some of the same things the Romans except they made it better.

I think the Byzantines were still able to exist because they had some things that the Romans did not. This includes a much more stable security system of hired police officers. They were also much more isolated for the safety of the people for being surrounded by water on three sides making it almost impossible to get to if the waters are highly protected.

I think that the Byzantines were able to survive for many more years because of many things, one of them being Constantine having many followers who kept with him on his way to Byzantium. Also, another was that in the western empire, the streets outside were dangerous, while unemployment, inflation, and excessive military spending all hurt the economy. The barbarian kings were the rulers of Rome, and the population had decreased from around a million living in Rome, to only thousands. Many of the Roman roads had crumbled and fallen apart. The rich all fled when they could to the nicer place of Byzantium, later renamed Constantinople. Constantine had established Constantinople in such a place so that it would be easy to defend, and also in the middle of trade routes. Constantinople was also surrounded on three sides by water, much like how Rome was. This made it easy to access, and increased its popularity.

I think the Byzantines were still able to exist because they did the things that are better than the Romans did. These includes the better builgings and more places to entertian. Also, they had better advantages at defending the city. It was safer than Rome. They also had some possibilities to go to the upper class in Byzantine. As the people came to the Byzantine, the city could continue to exist and grow.

The Byzantine Empire flourished and survived for many more years because the Empire is located in a location that is easily defended and was the centre of trade. The Empire was surronded by water and hills which made it easy to defended, and since it was the centre of trade, gold was in a steady flow, which made the Empire wealthy.

Agreeing with norman they did refine rome 's laws
=)

Because they created new laws, and copied the Roman ways. They also were very wealthy and easy to protect.

I believe the Byzantines flourished and survived for many more years because it had several things that Rome was not able to provide. This included having a more stable sercurity system and a better location. Police were hired to help keep everything in order, and the streets safe, while in Rome, streets were crumbling and falling apart. The Western side of the Empire was now so unsafe, dangerous, and unpredictable. The location of Byzantium also helped in many ways. It was easy to defend, and in the middle of trade routes. Much like how Rome was, Byzantium was surrounded on three sides by water, which made trade access easier. Byzantium's populatity increased over time, and so did it's population. Due to Byzantium's great achievement, the Eastern part of the Empire was now the most wealthy.

The Byzantines were able to exist because they took the good things about the Roman Empire and left our the bad things. Byzantium was newer and safer. In the western Empire there were dangers all over. There wasn't even good sewage! There were hired police officers to keep the citizens safe.

I think the Byzantines were able to survive longer for many different reasons. First of all, Constantine had many followers, who followed him to found the Byzantine Empire. From there, the barbarians took over Rome, leading those with money either to Byzantium or into slavery. This added to the Byzantine empire's population. Another thing that added to Byzantine's survival was the hired force of police officers. They were also surrounded on 3 sides by water, making it very hard to invade the city.

Cathryn Seibel Red Block said...

Byzantines were able to last longer because they had a stronger government, they were Christian so more people went there and it's location. They had a bettter defence system and and taxed more reasonably at first. It was a peasful place with lots of gaurds, archetecture and monuments. People wanted to go to a place where it was Christian and when barbarians invaded Rome Byzantium seemed like the perfect place. The way they were placed made it so that only they could destroy themselve. It was in the middle of the trade routes sorrounded by water. All together they were the best place to be.

Ryan C. Blue Block said...

The way that the Byzantines were able to exist still is that they had superior location and the city was very easy to defend. Also they had new laws and had wealthy people causing a great economy.

I think the Byzantines were able to survive for many more years because of a couple different things. They had a much better security system, and because of this they were virtually unbeatable. They had many more people in their land and this helped flourish their money and productiveness. It was surrounded on three sides by water, this made it even easier to defend and it increased it's population because people also wanted to be safe and a strong level and sense of security.

The Byzantines were able to survive because they had things that the Romans did not. For example Byzantium was easy to defend, had a solid social and economic structure, as well as peace. Constantine had also brought over all the rich people to Byzantium, which made Rome seem a lot worse. Therefore lots of people moved. All these reasons made it able for Byzantium to exist.

Sarah M. red block said...

The Byzantines were able to exist because they were in the middle of trade routes which helped them flourish and gain money. Another reason why the Byzantines were able to exist was because they were protected by water by three sides and also hills. The Byzantines also built grander churches and palaces which made more people want to come. The economy was stable so it was another reason people wanted to come. All of these reasons is why Byzantine was a long lasting empire.

RYAN EARL.,RED BLOCK said...

I believe that the Byzantines were able to flourish and survive longer than Rome because they were the wealthier half and they improved upon anything the Romans did and made it so much better.

Parker Lum, red block said...

I think the Byzantine empire was able to survive because they had a payed police force that wanted to work for them. Wealthy people that paid the police force with their taxes. Also was that people were able to change social classes, letting all people be happy if they could afford it. Byzantine was easily defended, it had water on three sides and triple walls, and a giant chain that prevented unwanted boats to enter their harbor.

Joshua Y. Blue Block said...

The byzantines survived and flourished becuase they took the part that Rome that made them successful and learned from the bad things. One reason is having police to patrol the cities. Rome did not have it, and therefore got weakened. The other reason is the location. Byzantines chose a place where there was only one location of where they would get attacked. Rome did a part of it, but did not reach coast to coast, there fore getting attacked at multiple directions. Unless thousands and thousands of ships attack Byzantine, it might fall. maybe the byzantine has thousands of cannons to counterattack the enemy navy.

Zaira Tovar Red said...

I think they were able to survive because they just took what Rome did and made it better. It was safer to live there and it had a lot of population. Just like how Rome was before it fell

Julia W. Blue Block said...

The Byzantines were able to survive for many reasons. First off, it was a much better place to live. It was easy to defend, wealthier, had a solid social and economic structure, and was most importantly peaceful. Because of all these reasons, citizens wanted to stay! There were chariot races and circuses for entertainment, and the social classes were able to change. People liked all of these positive possibilities. These are some of the reasons why Byzantium flourished and survived for many years.

Maya Waddell Red Block said...

I think that the Byzantines where able to survive because they did similar things that the Romans did, but they improved it and made it better.

Gareth Hart, Red block said...

I the Romans fell because they were stupid and did not euquillize the eastern and western parts of the empire. Becaused of this the estern side foulished and left the western side to die. The estern side became the byzantine empire and learned from the western sides mistakes.

Galen Deats, Red Block said...

The Byzantines were able to survive and flourish like Rome in it's heyday because their city had a very close proximity to the water. This acted as a natural moat to keep out invaders and gave them a very busy harbor that turned Byzantium into a trading hub.

I beleive that the Byzantines were able ot exist because they had a easier piece of land to defend and it was wealthy. It was also more peaceful so people would move there.

Ariana W. Red block said...

The Byzantine was able to survive and thrive much longer than Rome because Constantine had ruled Rome and seen how Rome fell and learned from Rome's mistakes to prevent that from happening.

Delaney T. Blue Block said...

I believe there are many reasons why the Byzantines were able to remain in power for many years. Most importantly, they had little competition due to the fall of Rome. Rome's civilization went from a rich, powerful empire with millions of citizens to a dangerous city with a population of only a few thousand. This left an open space for a new empire to rule. Also, the wealthy citizens of Rome fled to Byzantium looking for higher city standards. They supported Constantine and his beliefs. The city became wealthier and larger, being the center of many trade routes. This attracted many citizens through the temptations of a beautiful, vast city with growing popularity.

Alice P. Blue Block said...

There were many reasons how the Byzantines were able to survive for many years. Because of Constantine, the Byzantines were able to survive because of all his followers. Also, in the western empire, the roads were filled with bandits and were dangerous. Because of excessive military spending, barbarian invasions, and unemployment caused the economy to be hurt. The citizens, who were rich, fled the western empire and entered the western empire. Later, Byzantium was named Constantinople. Constantinople was in the middle of trade routes and was also easy to defend. Like Rome, Constantinople was surrounded by three sides of water which made it easy to get to. These are a few of the many reasons how the Byzantines were able to survive and flourish.

I think that the Byzantines were able to exist and grow because they were in an ideal space that was easy to defend, and was in the center of trade. This made it so the gold was always flowing in, along with many different resources that helped them to survive.

Many of Rome's patricians moved to Byzantium for a new life making it wealthier. with much of Rome burnt down and struggling many people were willing to pay to stay in the thriving city of Byzantium. The city was very well protected and a central trade hub, the city carried on the Roman traditions but made many of their own.

Cal Lewis, RED Block said...

The Byzantines were able to flourish more because they took the strongship and core of Rome and made it into something much more. They added on to the core of Rome with everything Rome seemed to lack.

Cal Lewis, RED Block said...

They had great protection, and it had a lot more resources than Rome because of them being a trading hub.

I think that the Byzantines were able to survive longer because they were in the center of trade so they were able to tax the traders that came through. Also they were able to defend their land very easily because it was surrounded on three sides by water and on the fourth side there were walls and a moat.

Justinian was the one emperor that made things successful in the Byzantine Empire. He expanded his empire by driving barbarians out of North Africa, Spain, and Italy. He was successful in defeating the Vandals, Visigoths and Ostragoths.

I believe the Byzantines were able to exist because they had a lot of things the romans did not. For example Byzantium was completely surrounded by water therefore enemies could not get to them as easily. They also had more strict laws and police officers to keep people in check.

the reason the Byzantines were able to stay alive was because they were the center of all trade. they had a great location in the middle of the medeteranean sea.

Sarah D. Blue Block said...

I believe the Byzantines were able to exist and grow because of three reasons. One is because of the protection that they had against enemies. This included three walls, one moat, a huge army and the natural body of water that surrounded them on three sides. The second reason is that they had a pretty solid economy. The tax was just right, everything was priced well and the jobs that were in the city payed a reasonable amount of money. My third reason consists of just the peace that covered the city. Their was hardly any crime and usually the Byzantines were responsible and trustworthy.

I think the Byzantine Empire was able to exist and make a impact in history because they copied the Romans. The trading routes were well protected and in the middle of the magor cities so it grew weathly, plus it had great security from barbarians and thiefs. This empire had great potetial and it became one of the biggest Empires in the world

The Byzantine empire was able to survive, and expand because they chose to located in the center of trade. Their locations was key, because it was easy to defend, and difficult to attack. They gained wealth by the flow of gold too. Their is the main reason for their existences.
