Caesar vs. Augustus Caesar (Week 10)

Tuesday in class you learned about two different Roman Rulers:  Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar. If you need a refresher, find the PPT titled "After the Punic Wars" posted on Edline! Write a CD/CM Paragraph answering this question:

Who was a better leader, Julius Caesar or Augustus Caesar?

Please write a CD/CM Paragraph to answer the question (see the prompts for what to put for each sentence):
  • Topic Sentence [1 sentence]:  Answer the prompt (this will NOT be a TADA sentence - instead a sentence that answers it)
  • CD [1 sentence]:  Pick one fact (it will not be a direct excerpt) and cite Mrs. Blancher (no page number either on this one).
  • CMs [2 sentences]:  Explain how the CD shows he is a great leader.
  • Conclusion [1-2 sentences]:  Answer this question - why was he a great leader?

To me, Augustus Caesar was a better leader. While Julius caused a civil war, Augustus made peace for a long period of time (Mrs. Blancher). Nobody wants to live and suffer while a war is going on. Living in peace would be better because nothing really bad would happen. I'd rather have Augustus as a leader. He would make a huge difference, like his uncle wanted to do.

I think that Augustus Caesar would be a better leader other than Julius because Julius caused a civil war while Augustus Caesar was peaceful.

I believe that Julius Caesar was a great powerful leader that shouldn't have been killed. After only a few years Julius Caesar became so powerful it made his own people scared, he only had one threat but he was defeated in battle. He ruled over everyone and had planned out his whole life ahead of him. Only he had never thought that his own people would be a threat, and that is what ended him.

I think that Julius Caesar is a better leader than Augustus Caesar. Julius is a better leader because when he was very powerful he gained many enemies but that just made him fight even harder and conquered all of his enemies and became the unquestioned powerhouse of the Mediterranean. This proves that he was a better leader because it shows that when he gained more and more enemies he didnt shy away and accept what he had, he wanted more and to conquer the enemies. HE was a great leader because he was brave and a good fighter as well as he pleased and helped the poor and the public in general

I would have to say Augustus Caeser was a better leader. For the reason that Julius was a brutal man, and caused the civil war. I choose this because Julius liked making things worse and staring wars while Augustus made peace within places. This is why I would have Augustus as a leader. But they are both good leaders in ways.

I think that Julius Caesar was a better leader than Augustus Caeser. Julius is better the better leader because when he gained his power, he conquered all the enemies. This proves that Julius was better leader because he fought hard. Also, he became more powerful. Julius was the better leader because he was brave and he helped the poor people.

Gareth Hart, Red Block said...

I believe that allthough Julius was kinder he wasn't as powerful as Augustus caeser. Augustust realized that if you wanted to retain power you had to crush all threats. this is proven with how the eygeptson civil war broke out. Augistus didn't wamt cleopatra to rule, so he went to war and destroyed the threat. Because of this Augustus lived almost twice as long as Juluis.

Juilius Caesar was a better leader, because he accomplished more. He was able to conqure more land, and make bigger differences in Rome. Like taking over Gaul, Eroupe and many other places. He was a great leader, becasue he lead my example.

Owen Chu, Red Block said...

I believe that Augustus Caesar was a better ruler because he brought peace. Julius conquerered more than Augustus, but Julius wanted to become king and ignored the Senate (Mrs. blancher). This shows that Julius is independent and does what he wants, whereas Augustus is more peaceful. I would rather live in a peaceful place than a war zone. Augustus is better since he didn't start a civil war.

Agustus Caesar was a better ruler than Julius Caesar because he brought peace to the Roman empire for a long time. "Julius Casear was stabbed twenty three times by members of his own senate" (Blancher, during social studies)If you were really a good ruler you would not have part of your own senate try to kill you. Agustus Caesar brought peace to the roman empire also he shared teh power witha military leader so they would get more power, see smart. That is why agustus Caesar was a better leader than Julius Caesar!

I believe that Julius Caesar was a better leader. He was a better leader because he gave land that was originally for the patricians and gave it to the plebeians and united Rome as well. In my opinion, a great leader must be wise and generous in order for both him, his people, and his empire to flourish.

Tiffani T. Blue Block said...

To me, Julius Caesar was a better ruler than Augustus Caesar. One reason for my thinking this is the fact that he was "Convinced something had to change" (Blancher SS class)This shows that he was very driven. Because of this, he ended up conquering Gaul, and rising to be the dictator for life. This made him greatly disliked throughout all of the senate. This was the only reason he was murdered. His murder was not in any way his fault. However Augustus Caesar caused the deaths of two perfectly innocent people. Julius Caesar accomplished a lot of different things in life, and he did them all by himself, unlike Augustus. I think that this shows that Caesar was an honorable man, and a wonderful ruler.

Hunter S. red block said...

I agree with Norman and Gareth. (Mrs. blancher) like Norman said who would want to live with war. Augustus is better and that is final.

Laura J., Blue Block said...

In my opinion, Augustus Caesar was a much better leader. I think this because "Augustus encouraged building (82 temples in Rome alone), trade, and government."(Blancher) By encouraging those three, he is basically trying to help out the community. Augustus was also trying to bring together different communities through trading and creating peace and unlike his uncle Julius, Augustus did not try to make enemies. By a combination of various things that Augustus had done, he had brought Pax Romana finally. It was earned through hard work, and proves Augustus was a good leader.

Sarah M. red block said...

I feel that Augustus Caesar was a better leader. Augustus kept the peace in Rome at least for a little while ( Mrs. Blancher ). This shows that Augustus was a better leader because he was able to keep peace in Rome where Caesar was not able. This also shows that Augustus was better because his citizens trusted him. He was a great leader because his emeporship lasted 41 years.

Isaac Waggoner Blue block said...

I think Augustus Caesar would be a better leader than Julius Caesar because he did not start a war but instead he was peaceful. Though Julies Ceaser conquered more land than Augustus he didnt listen to the senate and wanted to be the king and because of that he got murdered.

I think that Augustus Caesar was a better leader. Augustus gave other people the chance to be citizens rather than be sold into slavery (Mrs. Blancher). I would more rather be a Roman citizen than a slave. I would also like to live in peace after so much calamity before it. Augustus made a big difference for the better in Rome.

Joshua Y. Blure Block said...

I think that Julioues Caesar was a better person. "Julius conquered Gaul and Britain" [Mrs.Blancher].
I would want a leader who is courageous and is willing to act fast. Julius never hesitated to act to protect his country, and he was brave. He knew that his action will make some enemies, but he conquered them nontheless. Julius was a great leader, because he was smart, and brave, ad they are one f the characteristcs of a great leader.
FYI, Julius didn't cause a civil war. The senates did. The senates killed Julius, beacue they are big fat jerk faces. So, technically, Julius didn't cause the civil war.

Shannon S, Blue Block said...

I believe that Augustus Caesar was a better leader than Julius Caesar. This is because Julius Caesar started a civil war. He also had a bunch of enemies because he had conquered lots of land, killed many people, and gained a lot of power. Augustus, however, was very intellegent. He decided to become allies with Marc Antony instead of becoming enemies, which was wise because they combined brains with brawn to defeat Julius Caesar's old enemies. Also, after that, Augustus Caesar continued to rule for a long time and during that time period it was very peaceful (Pax Romana). He also raised an undefeatable army and gained lots of land.

Julia W. Blue Block said...

Augustus Caesar was a better leader than Julius Caesar. "Augustus encouraged building (82 temples in Rome alone), trade, and government."(Mrs. Blancher) Because Augustus encouraged these three, it shows to come that he was a good leader. He could have been like Julius, and made a bunch of enemies and do things that the people didn't like, but instead he encouraged things that the people liked. He also was a peaceful man, unlike his uncle Julius who had a lot of enemies. Being peaceful is a very good trait to have if you are a leader. Because of all these reasons, such as being peaceful and encouraging good things, and many more reasons, he is a great leader and better than Julius.

Alex M. blue block said...

In my opinion Augustus Caesar was a better leader. Augustus ,unlike Julius, offered the people he conquered citizenship as a Roman (Blancher). This shows that he was a more gracious leader that Julius. It also shows that Augustus wanted to have many different people included in his empire. Augustus was a better leader because he was more gracious that Julius.

Simon R. blue block said...

Julius Caesar is a better leader. Caesar was the person who did not cause a war, but brought slaves into the Roman Empire. This makes Julius a better leader because he brought lives into Rome. Plus Augustus Caesar was the man who started a war. This makes Caesar a better leader because even when he starts a war, he does not kill all of the people.

Ryan C. Blue Block said...

I think that Agustus is a better leader. Julias Ceaser cause i giant civil war while austus brought Pax Romana (Roman Peace) to the land (Mrs. Blancher). He did this by teaming up with Marc Antony combining brains with brawn. Living in peace like this was much better for everyone because they didnt have many riots braking out. Agustus was a better leader because he took land but offered the people ROman citizen ship instead of making them slaves or killing them creating allies and also people might give up their land if he wanted to conquer it knowing they would live in peace.

Arianna S. Red Block said...

Augustus Caesar was better leader then Julius Caesar. Augustus was in charge of Rome and Antony was in charge of Egypt but was seduces by Cleopatra (Mrs. Blancher). Augustus was a trust worthy leader and he proved to Antony and Julius that he was by keeping his role and sticking to it with out getting distracted. Augustus was a great leader because he didn't use his power for harm and he kept peace for a long time. Augustus was also a better leader because he understood what it was like to come from an average family.

I think that Agustus Ceaser was a better leader because he kept peasr for such a long time. A fact about Agustus was the he had very little enimies. This fact shows that he was a person that could keep peace with no one going againts him.

I believe that Augustus Caesar was a better leader than Julius Caesar. I beleive this because Julius Ceasar caused a war, and Augustus caused a long period of peace (Mrs. Blancher). This proves that Augustus Caesar is a way better leader because most everyone in ancient Rome would have preffered a peaceful, happy life. Agustus Ceasar is a great leader because his dictatorship lasted about 41 years and no major wars or rivalries broke out during that period of time.

In my opinion, I believe that Julius Caesar was a better leader than Augustus Caeser. Julius Caesar began to give land to the poor in the provinces, lands usually given to the Senators ( Mrs. Blancher). He was a great leader because he made the masses and the poor happy by giving them land. This was the opportunity for the poor to find jobs, which made Julius more successful as a leader. In conclusion, Caesar was a better leader due the fact that he showed graciousness to the poor.

In my opinion, Augustus Caesar was a much better leader than Julius Caesar. A wise teacher had once said, "Augustus gave other people the chance to become Roman citizens instead of being sold into slavery."(Mrs. Blancher) This shows that Augustus was merciful and that he was willing to give people a second chance. This also shows that if he were to do that, the citizens would love him, and having the citizens on your side was very important.Augustus was also a better leader because he maintained peace throughout Rome from 27 BCE to 180 CE, while Julius Caesar started the Civil War. He is also a great leader because he encouraged building, trade, and government. In conclusion, Augustus Caesar is more merciful and is a better leader than Julius Caesar.

Julius Caesar was a better leader. He was abetted leader because he beat his enemy Pompey. This shows he is a great leader because he defeated a powerful army. It also shows he is very brave and clever which are two things that make an awesome leader. So all in all he was a great leader because he is brave, courageous and can overcome strong armies.

Annaliese L. Red block said...

In my opinion i think that even though Julius Ceaser was a very powerful and respected leader. i think that Augustus Ceaser was a better leader. Augustus was smart enough to become allies with Marc Antotny and kill all of Ceaser's enemies. Augustus also made Rome a peaceful place to live. In all Augustus did a better job as a leader that Julius Ceasar.

Augustus Caesar was a better leader than Julius Caeser. Augustus worked with another powerful man, Marc Antony, to kill Caesar's enimies and split the spoils. (Blancher) This shows that he was able to know how much he deserved and still be able to give to others. It also showed that he was able to set his differences aside in order to get work done (seeing as Antony and Augustus did not get along well). Augustus held the power to rule while still giving to others, showing what a great leader would really do.

I believe that Julius Caesar was a better leader. While Augustus was making peace, Julius was fighting off the other nations (Mrs. Blancher). Romes enemy's wanted to attack and making peace wouldn't always help. Going out and fighting makes it so that no one has the chance to come and try to kill you. I would rather have Julius as my leader because I would always know I was safe. Julius was a great leader because he gave food and land to the poor.

I believe Augustus Caesar was a much better ruler than Julius Caesar. A fact, for example, states that from 27 BCE to 180 CE, Augustus ruled, maintaining peace and order. He influenced and enforced trading, government, and the building of sculptures and temples. Augustus gave generous second chances to his enemies to join Rome to become a citizen. He was a great leader because he was remembered and documented. While Julius began a war, Augustus kept any from impacting his people.

Augustus Caesar seemed he cared more for diplomacy than war. Julius was a very brutal and reckless man that loved blood being spilled. It truly seems Augustus was the better leader.

I believe Agustus Caesar was a better leader than Julius Caesar. Agustus wasw a better leader because he brought peace to alot of Rome, gave land to the less fortunate. He changed the "rules" from if they conquered a city/place (which he didn't do all that often, or nearly as much as Julius for that matter), the people wouldn't be put into slavery. In it's place, they became a citizen of Rome, which in my oppinion, and a lot of others' is a whole lot better. All in all Augustus Caesar was a better leader than his uncle, Julius Caesar.

Kelsey D. red block said...

I believe Augustus Caesar was a better leader then Julius Caesar. Augustus was a better leader because he was more of a firm but layed back leader, Julius was more of a " trouble maker" by starting wars and ruckus. Agustus was a great leader because he was more of a foundation of Rome than Julius. Julius didn't conquer cities as much as Julius which other city's appreciated I'm sure. He was a great leader because he was kind to the less fortunate by giving them land and helping everyone he could. Although Julius was a great firm leader in my opinion Agustus Caesar was a better leader.

I believe that Augustus is a better leader than Julius Caesar because of after he took over or took control he would offer than Roman citizen ship instead of being killed. I feel Augustus was a better leader in Rome. Augustus ruled Rome, and Antony went to Egypt (Mrs. Blancher). Agustus was more trust worthy, powerful, and had more knowledge. This shows that he is better, because he didn't leave to Egypt instead he stayed in Rome. That's why Agustus wuld be a better leader in Rome.

I believe that Julius Caesar was a better ruler than Augustus Caesar. Julius was a brutal man but he made a point not to mess with him or his country. Augustus was very good with the politicks but not so great at war strategizing were julius was good at both. In the end he was to much of a enemy that his own empire killed him

In my opinion, Augustus Caesar was a better leader. Augustus Caesar maintained peace for a very long period of time (Mrs. Blancher). This shows that Augustus was capable of keeping things under control while he had the power to. Because of this, Augustus Caesar was a very good leader. Anyone who tries to be a good leader that can't keep control of his or her power, and what they have power of wouldn't be a good leader. But Augustus was capable of these things, and that's why he turned out to be such a successful leader.

In my opinion, Julius Caesar was a better leader than Augustus. Julius didn't get into war and gave money and land to the poor Plebians of Rome. On the flip side, Augustus was so reckless he STARTED A WAR on Egypt based on a rumor.

To me, Julius Caesar was a better ruler than Augustus. The PowerPoint you showed us demonstrated that Julius gave money to the poor, while Augustus started a war with Egypt based on a rumor that turned out to be untrue. This proves that Caesar was a peaceful senator who helped the people and that Augustus was a reckless warbringer of an emperor. Julius Caesar was the better ruler because he was more careful in the wars he started and fought

Augustus was a better leader than Julius. He whipped out 2/3 of the Egyptian navt (Mrs. Blancher). Julius couldn't have done such a thing as killing almost a whole navy. Julius might have been a good leader but could not have done the things Augustus did. Augustus was a good leader because he learned from Julius and became powerful.
