Greek Art Lit (Wk 6)

Monday in class, you learned about the art of the Ancient Greeks. Please give one fact from the presentation and then give at least two reasons what you found interesting about it.

Example:
The Golden Rectangle was found in the architecture of the Greeks. It is interesting that they focused on having a balanced view for their buildings. This shows that a sense of beauty was important to the Greeks, especially the Athenians. Using the Golden Rectangle made it so that the Greeks had beauty in their architecture.

  1. I thought that "caryatids on the erechtheum" was interesting because the column looks like a woman. The other interesting thing was that there are some stories for that statue

  2. I liked the accropollis city because it was an odd place to build. it was also a smart place to build.

I thought the discus thrower was cool because it proved some Greeks were very athletic.

I learned that they are three different periods of the greek art that we see today, the Archaic, the Classical, and the Hellenistic. I also learned that for most of the important greek buildings there are column to hold up the building. The buildings that were really important were usually made up of marble and gold leaves.

I thought that a very interesting fact about the art and architecture of Ancient Greece was that that they created an equation that would be later called "The Golden Rectangle." This equation was very popular because of the fact that it created a rectangle that is very pleasing to the human eye. I thought this was interesting because people are still using the "Golden Rectangle" to this day in many architectural buildings. It is also interesting because it shows that the Greeks were so smart, that they would be able to create a well working equation that would be very helpful to many people later in history.

An interesting fact that I learned today is that The Greeks valued the human body. I think it is interesting because they think of it as a trophy while many people today think of it as a possesion. They atake great care to carve each figure accordingly because they wanted the human body to be 100% perfect.

  7. I think that the types of columns were interesting. I didn't know that the Greeks used different columns. The columns, the doric, the ionic, and the corinthian. They are interesting because people still use columns today.

  8. I learned that there were three different types of columns created by the ancient Greek. There was the doric columns, ionic columns and the corithian columns. There was also a special column called " Caryatid", which wre columns carved as women.

  9. I found it interesting that the people of Athens, normally peaceful, would put such "Don't mess with us" statues as the Caryatids (mentioned above) Also, I found amazing the skill it took to carve the statues out of the columns.

  10. An interesting fact that I learned is that the Classical Period was from 480-323 BCE. I thought it was a long time and I didn't know that there were different periods of Greece.

  11. I found out that higher pieces of land were harder for intruders to attack so the Greek would settle on higher land.

Something I learned in the art lit presentation was that Acropis was where the people of Greece whent up there when war broke out. I find that interesting because Acropilis was an armory and you really wouldn't define an armory as being safe.

I thought that the different kinds of columns were cooooooooool. There were Doric, Ionic, Caryatids, and Corinthian. I found it cool because they did it all by hand and as time progressed they formed different types of columns that were improving in look.

I thought the golden rectangle was interesting because I never even thought about the proportions of the Parthenon until I saw that.

I thought that learning about the different periods for art was interesting. I learned that there are three different periods - the Archaic period, the Classical period, and the Hellenistic period. These can each be recognized because each period had different art traits. For example the Archaic period's art can be recognized for things such as being stylized, symmetrical, geographical, and formal. The Classical period's art is idealized, S-curve, balanced, and calm. Lastly, the Hellenistic period's art can be determined because it is dramatic, diagonal, movement, and emotion traits.

I thought that the different types of columns were very interesting. I liked how many different types of columns they had like the ionic, doric, corinthian, and caryatids, columns. I also thought the style of the caryatid columns was interesting.

  17. I thought that the golden rectangle was an interesting proportion because the Greeks used that on just about every part of the Parthenon. It was also awesome because of the complex math that was used in that period.

I found it interesting that the Greeks valued using mathematics in their architecture. They used what they called the 'Golden Rectangle.' The ratio for the rectangle is 1:1.618. It was found to be pleasing to the eye, and is still found in many structures today. The Greeks used the 'Golden Rectangle' in the structure of the Parthenon multiple times. Greeks seemed to be quite advanced for their times, and it showed.

  19. Nike is the god of victory. I thought this was interesting because I didn't know that before, and because Nike is also the name of a very popular corporation.

  20. What i thought was interesting was that the classic period was when the Parthenon was built. I thought this was interesting because the classical period was when there was detail but not as much detail as the Hellenistic period. The classical period was also interesting to me because the people of Greece thought that they`re sculptures were the perfect beauty.

  21. I found that learning about the different types of columns the Greeks used was what sparked my interest most. I learned that doric, ionic, and corithian were the three different types of colums used. It was interesting how the columns got more complex as time went along and how people still use these three types of column making up to this day.

What I thought was an interesting fact about Greece was that Athens was the home of the gods. I find it interesting because people in Greece devoted their life to these gods. I also thought that the story of Athens was interesting because Athena and Poseidon were said to have competed to protect the city.

i thought that the most interesting thing about the presentation wasa that the Greeks had had two kinds of vases one called a amphora(a norrow top, tall vase for carring water) and the Krater(a short vase for mixing wine with water). I thought this was interesting because liked their water and wine so much they made specific vases for carry one or the other. That is what you call addicted!

The periods and techniques of sculptures were very interesting. there were three periods with their own style. The Archaic period that had very stiff and not very realistic sculptures. The Classical period that had movement in the sculptures. And the Hellenistic period that had realistic and emotional sculptures. These periods were interesting because they showed the skills of the artists as they grew through the years and that they were inspired by Egyptian art too.

I thought the "Golden Rectangle" was very interesting to learn about while studying Greece. It's fascinating to know that thousands of years ago, ancient humans learned that the common shape of a rectangle pleased the human eye and balanced out large structures. I'm amazed that the Greeks actually began to incorporate this shape into their mathematical skills and everyday life.

  26. The most interesting thing I learned is the three different kinds of Greek columns (the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian). I found this the most interesting because I love architecture, and am inspired by the Greek works.

  27. I thought the Greek discus thrower from the classical period was really interesting because his face was so calm, but it looked like what he was doing was hard.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The other reason I like it is because he looked like he was in motion

    ReplyDelete
  29. I found it interesting that the three major arts in Greece were Architecture, Sculpting and vase painting. I found this interesting because they are all art but they are each so different. Also I wonder why they focused an three art instead of making other parts of their civilization better.

  30. I learned that the Greeks liked simplicity i think that is interesting because some of there sculptures in the future are very intrecit and detailed.

The most interesting part about the Greek Culture is the idea of how they inspect the body of a man, and the reason why they are naked in some various occasions mostly special occasions though...I also found the columns interesting especially the Sculptural column the most intricate in a way, oh and the most detailed. And a matter of fact, they still use the Sculptural Columns today.

  32. I thought that it was interesting that the Greeks used a ton of math. I found this interesting because they used it for many things including the Golden Rectangle. I also thought is was interesting because I use some of the same math today.

I liked the part when it's the latest sculpture: Nike, the goddess of victory (the one with the broken head). It was so descriptive, such as all the lines of the drapes and the wings. I also like about how the sculpture was so nicely sculpted. There is no mistakes.

  34. I thought that the fact that Greeks are usually athletic was interesting because in many of their statues, it shows an athletic person, such as the discuss thrower statue.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I found the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic art periods were interesting because of how they developed over time. Also how the Archaic period was influenced by Egyptians.

  36. To me, there were many interesting facts. Such as the different type of columns that were Ionic, Doric, Corinthian, and Caryatids. it also surprised me when i figured out that the marble columns were carried to the tope of the acropolis. the Greeks also used mathematics in their beautiful architecture. it greatly surprised me when i figured out that the Greeks thought that the male's body was a work of art. In the Olympics, they would always have the males do the tournament naked so that everyone could see the beauty of their body.

I found it intresting about periods of arts, the arcaic, the classical, and the helenistic. I found the periods of art intresting because I didn't realise that the greeks where influenced by the Egyptians. I also found it intresting that even great artist like the greeks started out with simple( and kind of boring)sculptures.

  38. The word arete transalted as "virtue," the word actually means something closer to "being the best you can be," or "reaching your highest human potential. There was also a heavy emphasis of balance between all three areas.
